Description

This Edwardian double Albert watch chain is constructed from rounded, graduated curb links, with two equal chain sections meeting at a central ring fitted with a T bar. Each end terminates in a swivel dog clip for attaching a pocket watch, sovereign case, fob or other accessory.

The T bar carries a part British silver hallmark for 1910 together with the maker's mark HP, probably for Henry Pope. The dog clips carry corresponding silver marks. The individual links are also struck with lion passant marks for sterling silver, although many have softened through more than a century of wear.

Double Albert chains were designed to be worn across a waistcoat, normally with the T bar passed through a buttonhole and a pocket watch attached at one side. The second chain allowed a second watch, sovereign case, fob or other accessory to be carried on the opposite side.

The chain retains its traditional configuration and original period fittings.

Condition

Good antique condition with normal age related surface wear. Many of the individual lion passant marks on the chain links are rubbed, consistent with age. The links remain sound and both swivel dog clips operate correctly.
