An antique Japanese Meiji period bronze vase of stacked disc and baluster form, with two inlaid animalia panels - a bird, and a monkey eating fruit - worked in silver and yellow metal against a patinated bronze ground.

Description

The form is the first thing to register: a series of stacked disc shapes, more like a wood turning than a conventional vase profile, giving the piece an architectural quality that sets it apart from standard Meiji production. The baluster body carries two decorative panels - one with a bird, the other with a monkey or ape eating fruit - the figures worked in silver and yellow metal inlay with silver tracery patterns across the ground. The rim is broad and flaring, with chased detail to the inside edge. The bronze itself is patinated in differing shades, the variation deliberate rather than accidental.

The plinth base is cast separately and joined with a bolt - typical of production from the second half of the 19th century. Marks are present inside the base but are unclear; they may be foundry tooling marks rather than a casting or artist's mark. An unusual form and a fine quality piece.

Condition

Good for period. Minor wear and rubbing. A few spots of discolouration consistent with age.
