Fine Vintage Japanese Mossy Green Patinated Bronze Ikebana Vase by Shuzan 秀山 (Code 2192)
Description
A wonderful Japanese ikebana vase by Shūzan. It has mossy green and orange tones which seem to shift and intensify with the lighting. The detail in the patination is quite astounding and looks more like enamel work, especially with the gloss finish achieved. It is signed to the base '秀山' with an impressed mark and likely dates to the 1980's.
When the trend for ikebana took off in the West during the 1970's and 80's these authentic Japanese vases became very sought after. There were some larger makers such as Murashido, but also many small family workshops producing very fine work such as this. Shuzan appears to have been a very low volume producer, you can find an occasional example in specialist Japanese mainland boutiques (at equally boutique prices), but I can't reference any recent examples on the UK art market.
Condition
A very good example, very minor wear and the odd light surface scratch.
