George III Sterling Silver Vinaigrette - Novelty Satchel Form - Gilded Pierced Grill - Birmingham 1817 - 2393
Summary
A George III sterling silver vinaigrette in novelty satchel form, hallmarked Birmingham 1817. The tang forms the lifting lip to open the hinged lid, which reveals a finely pierced and chased grill, gilded, with the inner lid and base also gilded.
Description
A sterling silver vinaigrette of the George III period, hallmarked Birmingham 1817. A vinaigrette is a small hinged box designed to hold a sponge soaked in aromatic vinegar or smelling salts, carried as a personal restorative and a common accessory in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
This example is of novelty form, modelled as a miniature satchel or case. The tang, which forms a small projecting lip at the opening edge, is used to lift and open the hinged lid. Inside, the grill is finely pierced and chased and fully gilded, with the inner surfaces of the lid and base also gilded to protect against the corrosive effects of the vinegar-soaked sponge it was designed to contain.
The Birmingham hallmark dates the piece to 1817, placing it firmly in the George III period. The maker's mark is present but too worn to read with certainty.
Condition
Generally very good for the period. The gilding is in good order. The hinge is functioning correctly and the lid closes neatly.
