Georgian Silver Toddy Ladle with Twisted Baleen Handle c1820 (Code 2399)
An early 19th century toddy ladle with traditional pan shaped bowl. It is a high quality example with polished baleen handle which is split and strengthened with a silver tang running up from the mount. There are also silver pins to the handle for decoration and the top section is tightly twisted, the handle is finished with a turned silver ferrule. The bowl is of quite sturdy construction and has decorative detail to the rim. There are engraved initials to the front of the bowl, rather difficult to make out due to the cursive form but possibly 'TJ'. There appear to be no hallmarks, not uncommon for toddy ladles of the period, the metal tests as Sterling silver.
Handle good for period with normal light wear ans slight nicks. Some shallow indenting around the bowl with catches the attention more to the inside than the outside. No hallmarks, tested as silver.
Width: 5.8 cm ( 2 1/4 inch ) across bowl
Length: 37 cm ( 14 5/8 inch )
Weight: 46 grams (before packing)
