Japanese Satsuma Ware Koro with Ducks and Shishi Lion by Hododa - 19th Century (Code 2026)

  • £49500

A lavishly gilded Japanese satsuma ware koro dating to the late 19th century during the Meiji period c1880. The rounded body is set with tripod feet and dragon handles. The lid has three heart shaped piercings and is set with a large shishi lion. The lid has further fine pattern work with diamond mini panels. The main design features ducks in a waterside scenic with a distant volcanic style mountain. Note the detailed pompom and chrysanthemum flower heads which give much of the colour to the design. It is signed to the base for Hododa under the Shimazu mon on an aubergine coloured panel. Hododa purchased blanks to be decorated to order, and commissioned pieces from many workshops and thus his work can be found in a large variety of forms and styles.

A particularly good example, even the gilt wear is minimal for the type. It does of course have the crazing you expect with Satsuma ware.
