A large Victorian sterling silver oval locket with engraved decoration, on a fancy spiral link silver chain, dating to c.1880.

Description

The locket is of oval form, the front engraved with a diagonal bar set with an engraved ground of flowers and scrolls. It opens to reveal a photograph of a Victorian lady to one side, with part of a handwritten note to the other - the kind of intimate detail that makes a piece like this full of genuine character. One retaining ring is present internally but the glazing is absent. The hinge and opening mechanism are working well, and the bale is in good order.

The locket is unmarked but tests as sterling silver. The chain is a multi-link spiral with a barrel clasp, a form typical of the late 19th century. It tests as silver at approximately .800 grade and is also unmarked.

Condition

Good for period. The locket has some light wear and surface scratches consistent with age. The chain shows period wear but no significant faults.
