A late Victorian English black lacquer box with a fitted lift off lid, decorated with white daisies, smaller flowers, foliage and a butterfly; the interior is vivid red.

Description

This English black lacquer box dates to the late Victorian period and reflects the Japanese influence on British decorative arts during the Aesthetic Movement.

The square box has softly rounded corners and a fitted lift off lid. Its glossy black exterior is decorated with a naturalistic group of white daisies, smaller flowering stems and foliage, with a butterfly to one side.

The composition rises diagonally across the dark ground, leaving generous areas of undecorated lacquer around the flowers. Asymmetry and natural subjects were closely associated with the Japanese influence that became highly fashionable in British interiors and decorative arts during the later 19th century.

The interior is finished in vivid red, a striking contrast to the black exterior. The box is unmarked, as is usual for English lacquer pieces of this type.

Condition

Very good antique condition overall. The black lacquer remains unusually glossy and the floral and butterfly decoration is well preserved.

There are a couple of scratches towards the upper right area of the lid, together with light surface wear from age and use. There are small areas of loss around the lower join between the base and side walls.

The painted decoration remains considerably better preserved than is often encountered on boxes of this type.
