Summary

A Minton dinner plate with pâte-sur-pâte panels and embossed gilt brocade in the neo-classical style. One pâte-sur-pâte panel carries the initials of artist L Wood. Further raised gilt work panels and a gold foot rim. Gold backstamp to the reverse with the retailer's detail for T. Goode & Co of Mayfair, together with impressed marks and pattern number X1056D.

Description

A Minton dinner plate in the neo-classical style, with pâte-sur-pâte panels set against an embossed gilt brocade ground. One of the pâte-sur-pâte panels carries the initials of the artist L Wood, a decorator working in this technically demanding technique. Additional raised gilt work panels and a gold foot rim complete the decoration.

The plate was retailed by T. Goode & Co of South Audley Street, Mayfair, London - one of Britain's foremost luxury tableware retailers, established in 1827 and still trading today. The gold backstamp to the reverse includes the retailer's name together with impressed Minton marks and the pattern number X1056D.

Pâte-sur-pâte is among the most labour-intensive techniques in ceramic production. The decoration is built up by applying successive layers of slip by hand, each fired separately before the next is added, with the finished translucent relief carved from the accumulated layers. The high failure rate at each firing stage and the skill required meant these plates were produced in small numbers and carried a very high original price.
