Summary
A modernist sterling silver bangle set with a large spiderweb turquoise cabochon and three amber cabochons in butterscotch, honey and cognac colour. The bangle has a sinuous openwork head, hinged shoulders, safety chain and alligator press button clasp marked 925.
Description
A fine modernist sterling silver bangle, dating to the 1970s or 1980s.
The bangle is set to the centre with a large oval spiderweb turquoise cabochon, with fine dark matrix running throughout the stone. The turquoise is Hubei type, and accords with the type associated with the Cloud Mountain mine. Around the main stone are three amber cabochons in warm butterscotch, honey and cognac tones.
The silver work has a sinuous modernist form, with flowing openwork around the central cabochon and hinged shoulders to each side. The style matches that of the Gdansk school (Poland), where amber and silver were often used together in sculptural jewellery designs. Hubei turquoise was a feature of this regions modernist jewellery output matched with local amber from the Baltic region.
The bangle has an alligator press-button clasp, safety chain and hinged shoulders. It is marked 925 to the clasp.
Condition
Good period condition with light age related wear. There is natural oxidisation to the recessed areas, adding definition to the design. The clasp, hinges and safety chain are working.
