Description

A pair of late 19th century Japanese satsuma ware vases by Hakusan at the White Mountain kiln.  They are in the Kyoto style with a light oatmeal ground and 'petal' forms to the top with formal patterns.  The vases are of squared form and have twin lion mask bosses to the sides with exaggerated open mouths.  The scenes are of mountainous landscapes with villagers and wrap around to a lake on the reverse.  They are marked to the base for the maker.  Hakusan was one of the smaller makers of Satsuma ware but their production appears to be consistently good.

Condition

Both good for period with nice crackle to the glaze.  Wear is very limited for the age.  One has a minor firing tear to the rim.
