Description

A rare early 20th century shaped shallow dish with original scene by Lionel Edwards. The body is earthenware with a cream glaze and the rim has been decorated to represent wood grain. The main scene is of a huntsman jumping a fence on horseback with one horse fallen. It is entitled 'Gone Away' to the reverse which is a scene depicting the Warwickshire hunt in England. Descriptive printed marks to the reverse and a manufacturers impressed mark.

The piece is from a set of wares exclusively commissioned by Soane and Smith, a (now defunct) high class retailer in London's Oxford Street. The work was commissioned in 1922 and the registered design was granted in 1923. They employed Lionel Edwards to design the scenes for which he produced a set of water colour paintings, and WT Copeland to manufacture the items. Lionel Edwards was a famous water colour artist of the period, a member of the Royal Institute and illustrated books including Black Beauty and Lorna Doon. He was also a passionate fox hunter personally, and this stayed with him throughout his artistic career.

Few of these pieces now come up for sale aside some plates, suggesting the numbers produced were low. They would also have been very expensive when new due to the cost of commissioning such a highly ranked artist to produce. A fifty three piece service from Tetworth Hall consisting largely of plates and tea ware (including two of these shaped dishes) was auctioned by Christie's in 2008 realising £5250 on the day.

Condition

Very good order, appears to be unused. Age related crazing to the glaze and slight underglaze spots from production.
