Summary

A rare pair of Meiji period Japanese Satsuma pottery vases, circa 1890, with incised cloisonne style decoration in coloured slip. The decoration closely imitates contemporary Japanese cloisonne work of the period and the vases are an unusually fine matched pair in cheerful polychrome.

Description

A most unusual pair of Japanese Satsuma vases of Kyoto clay body. The decoration is incised and the pattern then covered in coloured slip, a technique also found in European ceramics of the period on work by Boch Freres and Longwy.

The decoration imitates that found on contemporary Japanese cloisonne vases, with the characteristic burgundy banded borders and geometric fill between polychrome floral and foliate panels. There are minor differences in the design between the two vases - the lower burgundy band carries a slightly differing repeat and the pattern wraps at marginally different points on each piece - both natural results of the hand crafted process rather than defects.

There are no makers marks to the vases, though ink lines are present to the foot rims, typical of Satsuma ware and likely used for batching during production. The vases date to the late 19th century, Meiji period.

A particularly rare pair in good original state, with decoration that remains vivid and clear.

Condition

Good antique condition consistent with age. The decoration is vivid and well defined. There is crazing to the undecorated areas, typical for Satsuma ware. There is a slight chip to the foot rim of one vase.
