Rare Pair Antique Japanese Satsuma Pottery Cloisonne Design Vases, Meiji c1890 (Code 2527)
Description
A most unusual pair of Japanese satsuma vases. They are of Kyoto clay body, the decoration is incised then the pattern covered in coloured slip. The process was also used in Europe and seen on work by Boch Freres and Longwy. There are no makers marks to the vases although there are ink lines to the foot rims probably for batching and typical of Satsuma ware. They would appear to date to the late 19th century during the Meiji period. The decoration imitates that found on contemporary Japanese cloisonne vases of the period.
The vases have some differences in design with the motif in the bottom burgundy band being slightly different, and the design also wraps slightly differently. This is due to them being hand crafted.
They are a particularly rare pair and the cheerful decoration makes them ideal for display as well as an addition to a collection.
Condition
Some differences in decoration due to the handmade nature. Crazing to the undecorated areas as typical for satsuma. Slight chip to foot rim of one vase.
