Signed with a moulded R Lalique mark to the interior and etched France with the model number to the base. Description

The Poissons bowl is one of Lalique's most well known Art Deco designs, first introduced in the 1920s. This example is in opalescent glass - a technique that, while not new in itself, Lalique refined and elevated to a defining characteristic of his work. The effect is produced through a combination of specific chemicals in the glass batch and a controlled process of cooling and reheating, which draws out the characteristic milky 'bloom' or 'fire' in the thicker sections of the moulded design. On the Poissons bowl, this means the raised bodies of the fish and the bubble forms at the centre glow with particular intensity, the opalescence concentrating where the glass is deepest.

The colour shifts markedly with the light source: against a dark ground the glass reads as a cool, luminous blue; under strong back-lighting it opens into warm orange and fiery amber tones - a quality that makes these bowls particularly striking when displayed with a light source behind or beneath them.

Marked with a moulded R Lalique in arc form to the interior, and etched France with the model code number to the underside.

Condition

Good for the period. Some minor wear to the interior surface. A few streak lines to the inside of the base, caused by trapped air bubbles during production - a known characteristic of the manufacturing process rather than damage. One tiny nick to the inner rim, most likely made by the glass worker when finishing the piece. Three short vertical scratches near the tail of one fish.
