R.F. Ciboure Art Deco Pottery Vase | Basque Hand Painted | Signed Berrouet | c.1920s | (3219)
Summary
An early 20th-century pottery vase by R.F. Ciboure, decorated with a hand-painted rural Basque scene and signed to the base with the artist's name Berrouet. A characteristic example of Ciboure's studio output from the Art Deco period.
Description
The vase is painted with a seated young woman beside sheep in an open rural landscape, with a house and tree receding into the background. The composition is handled with the economy typical of Ciboure's decorative style - the figures and setting are clearly defined but the treatment is painterly rather than illustrative, with the muted palette of iron red, steel grey and black giving the piece a quiet, graphic quality characteristic of the Art Deco period.
R.F. Ciboure was established in the French Basque Country in the early 20th century and became known for hand-painted ceramics drawing on Basque rural life, local costume and landscape. Many pieces were individually decorated by studio artists and carry painted signatures - this example bears a signature which appears to read Berrouet to the underside.
Condition
Good antique condition with minor age-related wear. No chips, cracks or restoration noted.
