Royal Worcester China Trumpet Vase Hand Painted Roses by Ethel Spilsbury Dated 1930 (3048)
Summary
A fine Royal Worcester trumpet vase, dated 1930 and hand painted with roses by Ethel Spilsbury. This large 9 inch example has a graceful flared form, rich gilt detail and a soft blush ground, giving it a particularly elegant display presence.
Description
A beautifully painted Royal Worcester trumpet vase, decorated with English roses by Ethel Spilsbury.
The tall trumpet form has a flared rim, slender body and spreading foot, creating a graceful outline that shows the floral painting to very good effect. Pink, red and yellow roses are painted among soft foliage, set against a warm blush ground and highlighted with gilt accents to the rim, base and body.
The vase is signed by Ethel Spilsbury, one of Royal Worcester’s recognised floral decorators. Her rose painting has a soft, natural quality, with layered colour and gentle shading that sits well with the Hadley-influenced style of the piece.
This is the larger 9 inch trumpet vase form, giving it more presence than the smaller examples often encountered. The shape number G923 reflects Worcester’s Grainger heritage, following the designs taken over by Royal Worcester in the late 19th century.
A refined decorative piece from the interwar period, combining Worcester porcelain, hand painted floral work and rich gilt detail in a classic display form.
Condition
Very good condition for period, with minimal wear. The gilt is a little heavily applied around the base. White areas near the base are reflections from photographic lighting.
