Samuel Alcock & Co Arabic Moulded Stoneware Jug - Victorian Antique c1845 (Code 2433)
An early Victorian moulded jug with an exotic Arabic female water carrier retrieving a ewer of water from a well repeated on both sides. It is entitled 'Arabic' to the base in black script. No known examples exist with the makers mark but the design is attributed to Samuel Alcock & Co from the script and design. The figure is thought to have been sculpted by Hugues Protat who also worked for Minton and sculpted a near identical female figure which was released as a figurine. The presumed date is circa 1845 which would make this design the earliest moulded jug produced by Alcock.
The body of this example is stoneware with smeared buff glaze fired to a low gloss. The handle bifurcates at the top and has acanthus leaf detail with a shell style moulding at the base of the handle.
Very good for period, some firing flaws as typical for these pieces with a clay tear through the base of the handle join with the decorative terminal. Further smaller flaws and a tight stress hairline through the base visible in the image.
