Scottish Silver Small Toddy Ladle with Baleen Handle, Edinburgh c1859 (Code 2403)
Description
A mid 19th century Victorian period toddy ladle with Edinburgh hallmark. The ladle is of small proportions suitable for strong drinks and may have been used for casual measuring for spirits in a home setting. The bowl is of pan form with rounded base and there is a worked rim. The handle is set at a high angle and the baleen handle has a twist over the upper section and is terminated with a silver ferrule. The hallmarks are rather rubbed but enough is visible to determine the Edinburgh assay mark for 1859 with the head of Queen Victoria. The makers mark is for Mackay & Chisholm of the famous Princes Street in Edinburgh.
