Summary

A large Victorian sterling silver photo locket with an engraved front and blank cartouche, suspended from a 41cm silver book chain with decorative pierced links. The hinged locket opens to reveal two photo compartments.

Description

Decorative engraving covers the front of the locket, with a small cartouche left blank for initials. A teardrop shaped bale connects it to the book chain through a large period spring ring. The chain links have pierced decoration, including cross shaped openings.

The locket is hinged and opens smoothly. Inside, the left photo compartment retains its original paper lining, while the right has a retaining ring and a clear acrylic protector. The acrylic panel is a replacement.

A clear Birmingham hallmark at the top of the locket dates it to 1880. The bale also carries a lion stamp for silver. The book chain is unmarked and tests as sterling silver.

Condition

Very good condition for the period, with both the locket and chain showing signs of careful use. One internal retaining ring is present. The clear acrylic panel is a replacement.
