Summary

A fine late Victorian swallow brooch or scarf pin in 15ct yellow gold, set with natural turquoise cabochons and split pearls, mounted to a 9ct rose gold safety pin style fitting. Circa 1880s to 1890s.

Description

A charming late Victorian gold brooch modelled as a swallow in flight. The swallow is made in 15ct yellow gold, the wings and body set with four small natural turquoise cabochons and five split pearls arranged across the breast and wings. The bright blue of the turquoise reads clearly against the warm yellow gold, the pearls adding a softer, cooler note between them. The forked tail and swept wings are well defined, the whole piece very small and precise - the kind of jewellery that rewards a close look.

The swallow was rich in Victorian symbology. Swallows return to the same nesting places year after year, and so became associated with safe return, fidelity and the idea of coming home. They were especially popular in sentimental jewellery and pieces given to loved ones who were travelling or spending long periods away.

Turquoise is the birthstone for December.

Turquoise also carried strong sentimental associations during the 19th century. Its vivid blue colour made it a favourite in Victorian jewellery, and it was commonly combined with pearls in pieces intended as tokens of affection, remembrance and good fortune. The combination here is typical of the period and the sentiment behind it.

The swallow is mounted to a rose gold safety pin style fitting, suitable for wear as a brooch or scarf pin. The pin is unmarked, which is common for small Victorian jewellery of this type. The swallow tests as 15ct gold and the pin section tests as 9ct gold.

Condition

Very good antique condition for the period. The turquoise and split pearls are all present, the pin mechanism functions correctly. Light age related surface wear only.
