Victorian Relief Moulded Pottery Table Jug with Blue Applique & Ape Head Spout c1870 (Code 2230)
An interesting 19th century Victorian period moulded pottery jug. It has an angular body set with sky blue applique over the gloss brown body. The colour combiniation is very unusual and not something you usually see, and there is a definite tension between the tones. Perhaps the most interesting feature though is the enclosed pouring spout which looks to be in the shape of a great ape face. The enclosed spout would serve to strain large chunks of ice or fruit. It is made to a good standard for it's type and likely dates in the 1860-80 region. There are no makers marks and this is not a design I have been able to reference, although it is almost certainly from Staffordshire.
A very good example, little wear for age. Minor glaze imperfections from production as normal for age.
