Description

A striking mid 20th century 9ct gold cameo ring of unusually large scale. The oval shell cameo is carved in high relief with the profile of a classical female figure, the pale cream portrait standing clearly against the warm peach shell ground. The carving is crisp and well modelled: the hair worked in fine layered strands swept back and pinned, with loose curls falling at the nape; the facial profile clean and well proportioned.

At approximately 28mm long, the head is considerably larger than the majority of 9ct gold cameo rings from this period and has the scale of a small cameo brooch translated into ring form.

The cameo is held within a substantial polished gold bezel bordered by a fine rope twist edge running the full oval perimeter. Beneath, the ring is built with an open gallery of sweeping crossed supports, allowing the large head to sit securely while keeping the construction light. The band is broader and more substantial than is often found on lighter cameo rings of the period.

A partial British hallmark is struck inside the band, including the 375 fineness mark for 9ct gold. The ring is offered with the vintage presentation box pictured.

Condition

Very good vintage condition. The cameo remains crisp and free from obvious damage, the mount is secure, and the ring is structurally sound. Very light surface wear to the gold is consistent with age and use.
