Vintage 9ct Gold Dress Ring - Large Natural Blue John Cabochon - UK Size K - C2695
Summary
A vintage 9ct gold dress ring set with a large natural Blue John cabochon in an elaborate cut-out mount, dating to the 1960s. UK ring size K.
Description
Blue John is found in only one place on earth - the caverns beneath Castleton in Derbyshire, England. Mined from Blue John Cavern and Treak Cliff Cavern. Local tradition proclaims it was mined since Roman times, when pieces were carried back to Rome as luxury objects, (although evidence is scant), but there is documented accounts of it being mined in the 18th century. The stone is a banded form of fluorite, its characteristic purple and cream-white veining formed over millions of years - and because the deposit is finite the annual extraction is strictly limited.
The cabochon here is a strong example: approximately 16mm x 12.5mm, with clear purple banding running through a pale matrix. It is set in an elaborate 9ct gold mount with cut-out triangular detail to the bezel and heart-shaped gallery work to the sides - the kind of setting that was made to show a stone off rather than contain it. The shoulders carry further cut-out detail, and the base of the band is left plain for strength.
Inside the band, an older British 9ct stamp consistent with 1960s production. The head is generously sized at 21.4mm x 17.07mm - this is a ring that will be noticed.
Supplied in a complimentary brand new presentation gift box.
Condition
Very good order with little wear for the period. The Blue John is in excellent condition - the natural lines and inclusions visible are characteristic of the stone and correct for a natural, unenhanced gem. Professionally cleaned and polished, ready to wear or gift.
