A 1970s 9ct gold statement ring set with a 6.3 carat natural smoky quartz. Oval facet cut in a decorative open-work gallery mount with trifurcated shoulders. Birmingham hallmark dated 1978, maker's mark G.Ltd.

Description

The stone is oval facet cut, of strong brown colour with an aubergine cast in certain light. It sits in a decorative gallery mount with open-work spokes below and trifurcated shoulders tapering to a plain band. The ring is hallmarked at the Birmingham assay office with a date letter for 1978 and the maker's mark G.Ltd.

Smoky quartz is a variety of crystalline quartz, coloured by natural irradiation during formation. The depth of colour ranges from pale grey-brown to near-black, with the richest stones showing the warm brown-aubergine tones seen in this example. It has been used in jewellery since antiquity and was particularly popular in Victorian and Arts & Crafts pieces.
