Description

Ola Gorie is one of Britain’s most important jewellery designers. In 1960 she became the first student to graduate from Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen in Jewellery Design, returning to Orkney with a then‑unprecedented ambition: to draw on the islands’ Norse and Celtic heritage as the basis for modern, wearable jewellery. When she launched her first designs – among them pieces based on the Maeshowe Dragon and the St Magnus Cross – they were considered pioneering. There was no jewellery being made in Orkney at the time, and craft‑based interpretation of Scottish history and culture barely existed as an industry. Ola and her contemporaries built it. Her designs have since been collected and worn around the world, and the studio she founded in Kirkwall continues to produce them today..

The St Peter's cross is one of her enduring designs - a Celtic cross form with a textured circular band at the intersection of the arms. This example is in 9ct gold and carries an Edinburgh assay office hallmark with a date letter for 1985.

The pendant comes on a 9ct gold belcher chain with 2.5mm links and a standard spring ring clasp.
