A vintage 9ct gold ring set with a soude sur spinelle emerald - a triplet stone engineered to replicate the colour and depth of a natural emerald, in an intense green.

Description

The stone is a soude sur spinelle emerald: a triplet construction with a crown and pavilion of lab-created spinel sandwiching a sintered glass panel, designed to mimic the appearance of a natural emerald. Under magnification, small inclusions are visible - a deliberate feature of the construction. An emerald of this size, colour, and apparent clarity would command a significant price; these stones were created to be much more affordable, and are now collected in their own right.

The band is marked inside with the older form of the 9ct gold hallmark. The ring likely dates from the 1970s. The stone is set in a simple claw setting that keeps the focus on the colour.

Condition

Gold in very good order with little wear. There is a chip to one of the edge facets, approximately 1.61mm x 2.05mm - just visible to the eye but unlikely to be noticed in normal wear. Professionally cleaned and polished, ready to wear.
