Description

A large vintage or antique copper tray by Nigerian artist Aikena Amadu of Kano.  The tray is of rectangular form with a knotwork pattern perhaps inspired by the Arts & Crafts movement. The size would make it suitable as a large drinks tray on a sideboard etc. It is hand beaten out of copper sheets and also hand engraved.  The reverse has the artist's name painstakingly done in pointil work. 

This artist operated from Kano in Nigeria during the early 20th century, similar items are catalogued with dates in the 1920's.
 
 
Condition

 

Hand made and hand beaten. Some period wear with scuffs and scratches. It looks to have been kept relatively well polished to the front although it is beginning to develop some natural patina.  Back has natural patina.
