Description

A substantial handmade copper tray by Aikena Amadu of Kano, Nigeria.

The rectangular tray is formed from copper sheet, with a raised border and visible hand beaten surface. The front is engraved with a central knotwork panel, framed by further geometric and interlaced borders. The decoration has a bold, rhythmic quality, rooted in the metalworking traditions of northern Nigeria.

The reverse is signed in point-work with the artist’s name, identifying the piece as the work of Aikena Amadu of Kano. Comparable early 20th century Nigerian copper and brass pieces by this maker are known, including salvers, bowls and trays.

The scale gives the tray real presence. It could be used as a large drinks tray, displayed on a sideboard, or shown as a decorative piece of African metalwork. The front has been kept relatively well polished, while the reverse retains a deeper natural patina.

A distinctive handmade object, combining practical form, decorative engraving and early 20th century Nigerian craftsmanship.

Handmade and hand beaten, with period wear, scuffs and scratches. The front appears to have been kept relatively well polished, though it is beginning to develop some natural patina. The reverse has natural patina.
