Vintage Egyptian Bedouin Siwa .800 Silver Large Cuff Bangle By Mohamed Mekkawy (A1273)
Description
A large and substantial cuff bangle. It is by the Bedouins from the Siwa oasis in the western dessert of northern Egypt. It is in the palm leaf pattern and has eight floral designs. It was made by Mohamed El Mekkawy, a noted silversmith operating during the early and mid 20th century. To the inside of the bangle it is stamped twice with his calligraphic name and it has two round marks of the Ottoman Turkish period. In the centre of these marks is the Egyptian silver mark for .800 grade silver and the Cairo town mark. It also has the cat symbol signifying the hallmark was prior to 1946. The bangle is open so can be carefully adjusted by bending. It is currently set to fit wrists up to 20cms which is larger than average for a ladies size.
