Description

Made by Joseph Smith & Sons (Birmingham) Ltd, this sterling silver pill box was hallmarked in Birmingham in 1988. The rectangular body has softly rounded corners and plain sides, while the lid is engraved across its full upper surface with scrolling acanthus style foliage, fine hatching and a narrow decorative border.

The interior is plain and polished. The inside base carries the Birmingham hallmark for 1988, the maker's mark and the 925 sterling silver standard. A secondary hallmark is also struck to the side of the lid. The hinge works correctly and the lid closes neatly.

Condition

Good vintage condition overall, with light surface wear consistent with age and use. There is more noticeable contact wear to the underside of the base. The engraved decoration remains well defined and the hinge is in good working order.
