Description

A distinctive Finnish art glass vase designed by Pentti Sarpaneva for Kumela, dating to the 1970s.

The vase is made in heavy amber glass, with a tall rectangular form, stepped base and moulded decorative bosses to the body. The warm amber tone gives the glass depth, while the strong vertical shape gives the piece a sculptural mid century presence.

The upper section is fitted with a decorative metal collar. The collar is personalised with names to one side and a date to the other, but it is loose fitting and can be removed if preferred. The vase can therefore be displayed either with the collar for its original 1970s character, or without it for a cleaner glass-only look.

The base is marked with the designer and maker’s name.

Pentti Sarpaneva’s work for Kumela forms part of the wider tradition of Scandinavian and Finnish art glass, where bold form, textured detail and rich colour often take precedence over applied decoration. This example has a striking amber colour and a substantial feel, making it an appealing decorative piece for a modern interior or glass collection.

Condition

Very good vintage condition with minor wear. The metal collar is removable.
