Summary

A large Murano sommerso Mandruzatto glass block vase in the faceted geometric style, double cased in red and pale amber. A substantial piece dating to the 1960s, and a large example of the form.

Description

The vase is cut in the characteristic Mandruzzato block form - a tall rectangular section with angled facets that refract light through the layered casing. The outer layer is a pale amber, encasing a deep red core, giving the piece a warm tonal depth that shifts with the light. Mandruzzato were among the principal producers of this style on Murano, working in the sommerso technique through the mid-twentieth century. There are no makers marks; pieces of this type were originally sold with paper labels, and once removed the attribution rests on the form and construction. This is a large and heavy example of the design.

Condition

Very good for period. Slight wear and the odd small scratch.
