A vintage sterling silver and amber pendant necklace with a reverse carved female portrait beneath a faceted amber surface, framed by a rope twist border and suspended from a 44cm snake chain.

Description

Dating to circa the 1980s, this oval amber pendant has a faceted front and a female portrait carved into the reverse. Viewed through the transparent amber, the portrait sits beneath the surface, its depth changing with the angle of the light.

The young woman is shown in profile with upswept hair, a necklace and a floral spray. A small bow in her hair is picked out in white enamel on the reverse. From the front, it appears as a pale highlight against the warm amber.

A sterling silver oval frame with a rope twist border surrounds the amber, with a polished bail above. The pendant hangs from a 2.5mm snake chain, approximately 44cm long, fastening with a small lobster clasp.

The chain fittings carry Polish silver assay marks for Wrocław together with Italian 925 marks. These suggest Polish manufacture, with the Italian marks probably relating to subsequent distribution or sale. Amber jewellery was widely produced in Poland during the later 20th century and also supplied to the Italian market.

The flowing hairstyle, floral subject and oval format show a clear Art Nouveau Revival influence.

Condition

Good vintage condition with light age related surface wear. The amber is in very good order for its age. The silver mount and snake chain are in good order, and the lobster clasp operates correctly.
