Description

The box is of compact heart form, the lid carrying a broad plain polished centre that catches the light cleanly against the engraved decoration running around its edge. The engraving is a fine foliate pattern with a dotted inner border - restrained enough to frame the plain silver without competing with it. The sides and interior are left plain, the shaped construction giving the box a neat, considered appearance.

Mark Houghton Ltd operated from Hatton Garden, London's historic jewellery and silversmithing quarter, supplying quality silver giftware through the trade. The London import hallmark for 1993 confirms the piece was assayed at the London Assay Office and meets the 925 sterling standard. The sponsor's mark, standard mark and date letter are all struck clearly to the underside.

The lid holds closed by friction and is working correctly. A box of this form works equally well as a pill box, a small trinket or ring box, or simply as a desk or dressing table object. The heart shape and the 1993 date make it a piece with a story - whether that story belongs to whoever first received it, or to whoever receives it next.

Condition

Good vintage condition with light age-related wear. Surface scuffs to the underside from normal use, with minor wear around the hinge and edges. The hinge is secure and the friction closure works correctly.
