Description

A well made sterling silver hinged bangle produced by Bracelon Ltd of Birmingham, a specialist bangle maker known for their patented side-tension clasp mechanism. The bangle is fully engraved across the outer face with a continuous design of scrolling foliage, large stylised flowers and curling leaves, worked against a fine engine turned ground that adds texture and depth to the background. The upper and lower edges carry a fine milgrain border, neatly finishing the engraved panel.

The hallmarks are incorporated into the decorative design as feature marks, a characteristic of certain Birmingham bangle makers of the period. The anchor mark for the Birmingham Assay Office and the date letter D for 1978 appear as cartouches set within the scrollwork on the outer face, visible as part of the design. The maker's mark B Lᵀᴰ appears both within the exterior decoration and repeated on the interior of the band, alongside the full hallmark sequence and the inscription PAT No 1167637, recording Bracelon Ltd's registered patent for their side-tension clasp.

The clasp itself operates by side tension, the two ends of the bangle meeting at a sprung joint rather than a conventional box or tongue fitting. This mechanism gives a clean uninterrupted line to the bangle when closed and holds securely on the wrist without a separate safety catch.

The inner surface is plain and polished, giving a smooth comfortable fit against the skin.

Condition

Very good condition. The engraving is crisp and well defined throughout. The clasp mechanism operates correctly and holds firmly. Minor surface wear consistent with age, nothing to detract from the piece.
