Description

These sterling silver cufflinks were made to display the special British millennium hallmark arrangement used in 2000. Each oval front carries a group of marks across its surface, including the 925 sterling standard, Birmingham anchor, date letter and a distinctive cross containing the figures 2000.

The sponsor mark reads BAO for Birmingham Assay Office. This mark was used where an item did not carry the registered sponsor or maker mark of an individual manufacturer. The reverse panels are plain and polished, joined to the fronts by short silver chain links in the traditional double panel style.

Introduced as a commemorative hallmark for 2000, the millennium mark was used alongside the normal statutory hallmarking system. Here the hallmark itself is made a prominent part of the design rather than being placed discreetly on the reverse.

Condition

Good condition overall with light surface wear consistent with age and use. The feature hallmarks remain clear and well defined, the connecting chains are secure and the cufflinks are ready to wear.
