A large sterling silver brooch by C W Sellors Ltd, set with a natural cabochon in which translucent moss agate gives way to rich carnelian. Fully hallmarked at Sheffield for 1997.

Description

The cabochon is the centrepiece - polished to a smooth dome, displaying a naturally formed transition between two distinct varieties of chalcedony. Green branching mossy agate inclusions spread through the translucent portion. Below, the stone deepens into warm red and reddish-orange carnelian, the colour shifting gradually rather than at a hard boundary. The pattern is not assembled from separate sections, it occurs within the single continuous stone.

Moss agate is a translucent chalcedony containing branching mineral inclusions that resemble foliage or miniature landscapes. Despite their organic appearance, these markings are not fossilised plants. They form as mineral rich fluids move through developing silica, depositing trace minerals - typically iron or manganese oxides - along tiny channels and fractures in the stone.

Carnelian is also a chalcedony, its orange and red colouring produced principally by iron oxides. In this stone, changes in mineral content during formation created the natural passage from cool, dendritic moss agate into the warmer carnelian areas below.

The cabochon sits within a polished sterling silver setting edged with a decorative twisted rope border. The reverse carries a hinged pin and safety catch. Hallmarks are struck to the inner edge of the setting.
