Description

This large sterling silver nurses style belt buckle was made by Ari D Norman and hallmarked in London in 1995.

The buckle is formed from two matching rounded triangular halves which meet at the centre. Each section is cast and pierced with an angel figure shown in profile among large flowers and scrolling stems. Feathered wings extend behind each figure, while the openwork border continues the floral design in an Art Nouveau revival style.

The reverse reveals the solid cast construction and conventional belt fittings. Each section has a long bar, with a hook and rectangular loop arrangement joining the two halves at the centre.

The full London hallmark is struck along the lower border of one half. It includes the Ari D Norman sponsor's mark, lion passant, London assay mark and the date letter for 1995. Ari D Norman's design language drew particularly on Victorian, Art Nouveau and Art Deco sources. The firm's design and manufacturing base moved to London in 1976, and in 1989 Ari D Norman became the first British silversmith to receive the Queen's Award for Export Achievement.

This type of decorative silver buckle is closely associated with traditional nurses belts, but it can also be worn as a dress or sash buckle. Its nursing association makes it appropriate as a retirement, graduation or presentation gift.

Condition

Very good vintage condition with light surface wear consistent with age and use. The loop and belt fittings are all present and functional.
