Description

This vintage Wyvern Princess writing set was made in Leicester by Wyvern Fountain Pen Co. Ltd and dates to around 1951. It comprises a fountain pen and matching mechanical pencil, both with dark green resin barrels and gold and silver tone caps.

The barrels are impressed with the Wyvern Princess name and Wyvern trademark, together with Made in England markings. The fountain pen has a 14ct gold nib marked 14CT. It writes when dipped and retains its internal breather tube, but no ink sac is fitted. A replacement bladder will be needed for normal filling and use.

The matching mechanical pencil operates by turning the ferrule to advance or retract the lead. Its mechanism works, though it is somewhat stiff after long storage; some lead remains inside. It takes approximately 1.2 mm lead.

The set retains its original flock covered presentation case. Inside the lid is the inscription:

“With Love from Robin June 4th 1951”

Original Wyvern guarantee and instruction papers for both instruments are included. They identify the Wyvern Fountain Pen Co. Ltd of Woodboy Street, Leicester, and note that the company was established in 1896. The pencil instructions describe the original lead advance and refill arrangement.

The matched instruments, fitted case and original paperwork make this an unusually complete Wyvern Princess set from the early 1950s.

Condition

Good vintage condition overall with minor surface wear consistent with age and use.

The mechanical pencil mechanism works but is presently a little stiff. Lead remains inside.

The fountain pen nib writes when dipped. The internal breather tube is present, but there is no ink sac fitted, so a replacement bladder will be required for normal filling and use. The 14ct nib appears in good order.

The original case has age related wear, particularly to the flock lining and exterior. The original papers show normal handling and storage wear.
