Description

The brooch has a gently curved open frame in 9ct gold, the structure built up in layers - a slender bar running through the centre, with a scrolling geometric surround applied above it. At the centre, a round faceted blue glass stone sits in a raised claw setting, its deep teal-blue tone providing a focal point against the warm gold. Four split seed pearls are arranged around it, each mounted within a small flower-shaped collet that holds the pearl flat against the gold.

Applied gold beads punctuate the frame at intervals, and small flower-shaped details echo the pearl settings at the terminals. The overall effect is of a piece that knows exactly what it is doing: the scrolling lines and floral detail belong to the Edwardian tradition, while the emerging geometric structure of the frame - the way the open surround sits above the bar in a defined, almost architectural arrangement - anticipates the Art Deco period that followed. Pieces that sit at this transition are often more interesting than those that belong firmly to one style or the other.

The reverse has a long hinged pin and an early safety-style clasp. A cast pad mark to the bar appears to read 9c, though it is not fully legible; the metal has been independently tested as 9ct gold.

Condition

Good antique condition with light wear consistent with age. The blue glass stone and split seed pearls are present and secure. The pin and safety clasp are in working order. Minor surface marks and natural age-related wear to the settings.
