Antique Dutch Amstel Porcelain Cup and Saucer - Hand Painted Birds and Gilt - Circa 1800 - 2884
Summary
A late 18th to very early 19th century Dutch porcelain cup and saucer, attributable to the Amstel factory at Ouder-Amstel. Both pieces are finely hand painted with individual birds on delicate gilt branches, with further gilt sprigs and rims.
Description
A fine antique Dutch porcelain cup and saucer dating to around 1800 and attributable to the Porceleinfabriek aan den Amstel at Ouder-Amstel.
The cylindrical cup and deeply dished saucer are both decorated with individually painted birds perched among delicate gilt branches. Small scattered gilt motifs provide further decoration across the otherwise restrained white porcelain ground.
The cup has a simple angular handle with gilt detail, while both pieces are finished with narrow gilt rims.
The combination of cylindrical cup form, deeply dished saucer, restrained gilt ornament and naturalistically painted bird decoration is characteristic of Dutch porcelain produced around the turn of the 19th century.
The pieces are unmarked, but the form and decoration closely accord with documented Amstel porcelain of the period. The Amstel porcelain factory at Ouder-Amstel operated from approximately 1784 to 1809, producing hard paste porcelain decorated with landscapes, birds, flowers and gilt ornament.
Museum collections include surviving Amstel cups and saucers with related bird decoration including the V&A, London -

The unusually well preserved gilding is particularly notable for a service piece of this age.
Condition
Good antique condition for a piece dating to around 1800.
There is a faint stress hairline through the lower section of the handle.
