Description

Marples & Beasley were a Birmingham jewellery manufacturer active in the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, producing silver and enamel pieces that sat at the accessible end of the Art Nouveau market - well-made, commercially astute, and now genuinely collectable. This brooch is a good example of their output: the central panel carries enamel in a graduated wash from blue through to green, laid over a textured bubble-effect ground that gives the surface movement and depth. The colour transition is clean and the enamel intact throughout.

The piece carries a full Birmingham assay office hallmark for 1909, with the makers' initials on the reverse. The pin is steel - standard practice for the period - and both pin and catch are working correctly.

Condition

Very good for period. Some wear to the hallmarks, though they remain legible. The steel pin shows some aging consistent with its age. No chips to the enamel. Clean, polished and ready to wear or gift.
