Summary

An antique Burmese carved hardwood table box from the early 20th century interwar period, deeply carved to the lid and body with a Kinnara figure, peacocks, elephants, Chinthe and scrolling foliage. A scarce example of Burmese decorative woodwork with a German made lock.

Description

A Burmese carved hardwood table box dating to the early 20th century interwar period.

The lid is deeply carved with a Kinnara - a celestial being from Buddhist and Hindu tradition, shown here apparently subduing or in combat with another figure. The body of the box carries carved peacocks and scrolling leaf decoration, with Chinthe (the leonine guardian figures of Burmese temples) and elephants worked around the sides. The feet are carved in the form of leaves.

The lock is German made - imported hardware of this type was commonly used in quality Burmese cabinetwork of the period. The box locks but the throw does not currently engage the catch, and one catch is missing from the lock plate.

Burmese carved wooden boxes are genuinely scarce on the Western market and this is a good quality and well preserved example.

Condition

Generally very good condition for the period. There are some small losses to the carvings but nothing significant. The tips of some of the feet have minor losses, not very noticeable given the design. The lock throws but does not engage the catch, and one catch is missing from the lock plate.
