Description

A most unusual and anomolous antique box. The exterior would very much suggest a Welsh chip carved design from the 17th to 18th century. However, it is in soft wood and stained and to the top right corner of the lid is a Lincolnshire Imp. To the centre of the lid is a carved panel with initials perhaps EF or EL. The construction is nails to the base panel and glue joints to the sides. The brass hardware is of Victorian period and it has a working lock with key.

Perhaps this is constructed from older panels or someone has taken inspiration from earlier pieces and produced this in the 19th century. The carving appears too good to be an ameteur shed type piece. Certainly an interesting box.

Condition

Minor losses to the carving in places. Some minor shrinkage splits and separation of the joints. Right side of lid front is going up slightly but the box will still lock effectively.
