Applied decoration in yellow, green and deep pink glazes, with oxide use beneath the applied detail which has blackened in the kiln to produce areas of metallic tone. Base marked EWB Eng 1 with the castle pad mark.

Description

An art pottery vase from Castle Hedingham Pottery, made by Edward Bingham and dating to approximately 1890. The vase is decorated with applied relief ornament in yellow, green and deep pink glazes. Beneath the applied detail, oxides were used during production which have blackened in the kiln, giving those areas a metallic tone against the coloured glazes above.

To the base the vase carries the mark EWB Eng 1 together with the castle pad mark, the characteristic impressed mark associated with Bingham's Castle Hedingham Pottery.

Condition

General crazing throughout, consistent with age and typical of Castle Hedingham ware. Glaze chips in places. Some kiln blowout around the foot. One minor hairline to the rim. A patch of glaze accumulation around the foot rim. These characteristics are representative of Hedingham production and expected in pieces of this age and type.
