A small round early Victorian gold brooch with a central split pearl set within a blue enamel star, enclosed by a double beaded border.

Description

The split pearl sits at the centre of a rich blue enamel star. A textured base beneath the enamel adds detail within the star, while two rows of gold beading frame the circular brooch. It measures approximately 17.2mm across.

The reverse is open backed, with a handmade tube hinge and a simple hook catch. Small pins of this type were often worn by gentlemen at the neck to secure a necktie.

The brooch dates to circa 1840. There are no visible hallmarks or maker’s details. The outer frame tests as approximately 21ct gold, while the pin and hook test as a lower carat gold. The pearl is likely to be natural, rather than cultured given the early Victorian date.

Pearl is a birthstone for June.

Condition

Very good antique condition. The pearl and enamel are in very good order, with slight wear and light scratching to the gold. The hinge and pin are working well.
