Summary

A finely made early Victorian gold brooch pin, dating to around 1840. The round form is centred with a split pearl and decorated with a blue enamel star motif, set within a double beaded gold border.

Description

A charming early Victorian gold, enamel and split pearl brooch pin, with beautifully detailed period workmanship.

The brooch has a compact round form, framed by a double beaded rim. At the centre is a split pearl, set within a star-shaped design decorated with rich blue enamel. The enamel is laid over a textured base, giving the star added depth and a finely worked appearance when viewed closely.

The reverse is open backed and fitted with a handmade tube hinge and simple hook catch. This type of pin was often worn at the neck by gentlemen to secure a necktie, though its scale and decorative finish also make it very wearable as a small brooch or accent pin.

There are no visible marks or maker’s details. The outer frame tests as approximately 21 carat gold, while the pin and hook test as a lower carat gold. Given the early Victorian date, the pearl is likely to be natural, as cultured pearls were not commercially available when this piece was produced.

A beautifully preserved small jewel from the early Victorian period, combining high-carat gold, vivid enamel and pearl detail in a distinctive star design.

Condition

Remarkably good antique condition for age. Pearl and enamel are in very good order. There is slight wear and light scratching to the gold. Hinge and pin are working well.
