Georgian Antique Wine Glass - Double Series Opaque Twist Stem - English Lead Glass - c1765 - 3155
Summary
An English lead glass wine glass of c.1765, with a double series opaque twist stem - three-part construction throughout, ogee bowl, conical foot, and no restoration.
Description
The glass is a fine example of mid-Georgian English drinking glass, made in lead glass at a time when the double series opaque twist was at the height of its fashion. Construction is in three parts - bowl, stem and foot were each made individually and joined at the glassworks, a method that distinguishes English work of this period from Continental production.
The stem is the defining feature: at its centre runs a spiral gauze formed from fine filaments, and around it a pair of outer tapes twist in a corkscrew pattern - the combination that gives the double series its name. The bowl is ogee in form, with the characteristic inward curve at the base that draws the eye upward. The foot is conical, and the pontil to its underside is rough snapped - unground, as left by the glassmaker - which is consistent with the period.
Tiny air bubbles and mineral inclusions are present in both bowl and foot; these are inherent to the material and the making, not defects.
Condition
Good order for period. Some tiny flea-bites to the underside of the foot rim, and period wear to the foot rim consistent with age and use. Minor wear to the bowl. No restoration or repolishing.
