Antique Italian Tin Glazed Maiolica Jar - Grotteschi Decoration - Possibly Urbino - 1945

Summary

An Italian tin glazed maiolica jar with painted grotteschi, a fleur de lys within a wreath, and the remains of applied handles at the rim.

Description

The jar carries an Italian form of the fleur de lys within a wreath, surrounded by painted grotteschi in the manner associated with Raphael. The handles appear to have been serpentine in form; substantial parts are now lost at the rim. The painting and foot suggest an early piece, though neither settles its exact date.

The decoration has affinities with maiolica from Urbino and Deruta, perhaps more strongly with Urbino. It was acquired with a group of late 17th and early 18th century continental ceramics, and an early 18th century date has been suggested for this jar.

A blue mark is present on the underside. It has not been identified, it has resemblance to a mark associated with the workshop of Maestro Giorgio Andreoli but this is not currently attributable. The piece retains room for further research.

Condition

Significant damage and loss to the handles, with glaze losses at the rim and foot rim. There are firing flaws in the glaze, and the white glaze inside is uneven in places. The main body and foot are intact with no breaks noted.
