Antique James Hadley & Sons Worcester Porcelain Vase - Hand Painted Roses - Sea Green Mark - c.1905 - 3261
Summary
A James Hadley & Sons Worcester porcelain vase of cloven form, hand painted with yellow and red roses on a tonal ground, with an apple green neck and gilded rim, bearing the sea green factory mark and dating to circa 1905.
Description
James Hadley was one of the most gifted modellers ever to work at Royal Worcester, spending over two decades there before establishing his own studio in Worcester in 1896. The firm he founded - James Hadley & Sons - produced porcelain of exceptional quality, drawing on the same skilled workforce and decorating traditions as the parent factory but operating independently. The sea green printed mark used on this vase is specific to the Hadley factory and dates its production to the period between 1896 and 1905, when Royal Worcester absorbed the business following James Hadley's death. Pieces bearing the Hadley mark are consequently finite in number and increasingly sought by collectors of Worcester porcelain.
The vase is of cloven form - the body pinched to create lobes - a shape characteristic of the Hadley range and well suited to the naturalistic floral decoration it carries. The principal face is painted with a full-blown yellow rose and a deep red rose, their petals rendered with careful tonal shading over a soft graduated ground. Further buds and roses appear to the reverse, completing the composition around the form. The outer neck is glazed in apple green, a colour used frequently by Hadley to frame floral subjects, and the rim carries gilding.
The sea green factory mark to the underside includes the shape number beneath.
Condition
Good for period. Some wear to the gilt rim, consistent with age and use. Otherwise in very nice order.
