Summary

An early 20th century Japanese Satsuma ware vase, likely from one of the Kyoto kilns, decorated with figures amid extensive gilt work, cell patterns and raised enamel - a well-executed example from the late Meiji or Taisho period.

Description

Satsuma ware of this type - figural, heavily gilded, with raised enamel detail over a cream ground - was produced in large quantities for the export market during the Meiji and Taisho periods, but quality varied considerably between kilns and workshops. This example is competently decorated throughout: the figures are rendered with care, the gilt work is dense and well-applied, and the cell patterns that frame the figural panels are crisp.

From the style and execution, the piece is consistent with Kyoto production rather than the Satsuma region itself - Kyoto kilns were among the most prolific suppliers of export Satsuma from the 1890s onward. There are no maker's marks to this example, which is not unusual for pieces from smaller workshops of the period.

The fine crazing to the glaze is intentional - a characteristic of the earthenware body and the traditional Satsuma firing process, not a fault.

Condition

Very good overall. Some gilt rubbing around the rim, as is typical for pieces of this age and type. The crazing, as noted, is inherent to the ware.
