Summary

A Royal Worcester blush ivory globular posy vase of spiral-lobed form, hand coloured with roses and lilies over a transfer outline, bearing the patriotic Union Jack mark and dated 1914.

Description

The vase is formed from mould G101, one of the spiral lobed shapes inherited by Royal Worcester when it absorbed the Grainger factory in 1889. The body is finished in the blush ivory ground - a warm, graduated wash running from pale cream to soft apricot - that became synonymous with Worcester's domestic and export ranges from the 1880s onward. The floral decoration, roses and lilies with scattered forget-me-nots, is applied by hand over a transfer-printed outline, a production method that allowed consistent composition while supporting the softness of hand colouring. The gilt rim is fine and even.

The base carries the standard green Royal Worcester printed mark with crown, alongside the Union Jack flag - a device that appears exclusively on pieces produced from mid-1914 into the early war years. It served overlapping purposes: patriotic solidarity after Britain entered the war on 4 August 1914, reassurance to buyers in the US and Commonwealth that the piece was British made, and a marketing tool during a period of reduced luxury spending. On a piece with a confirmed 1914 date code, the flag mark is not decorative - it is documentary.

Condition

Slight wear only, consistent with age and use. Gilt rim retains good coverage. No chips, cracks or repairs noted.
